You are currently viewing Determining the average lifespan of your home’s furnace

“How long does a furnace last? By looking at furnace size, installation, and its effects on indoor temperature, homeowners can figure out how long their furnace will last before it’s time for a replacement.

Generally, a homeowner can expect a furnace to last 15 to 20 years. With excellent routine maintenance and a little luck, a furnace can last even longer. Likewise, a neglected furnace may not last beyond its warranty.

In general, oil-fueled furnaces have the longest life expectancy, and gas-fired furnaces have the shortest. Homeowners should know which source—oil, gas, or electric—powers their furnace because it affects longevity and the specifics of maintenance and associated energy costs.”

If you’re unsure of how old your furnace is, you should be able to find out via its serial number. There should be a label somewhere on the outside of the unit or in the cabinet door. Once located, a simple online search should give a rough estimate of when that unit was manufactured. If you discover that the unit is older than 10 years, it might be wise to have a repair technician give it a look over.
