“The Environmental Protection Agency announced this week that they will move forward with a phase out of hydrofluorocarbons.
The greenhouse gas is commonly found in air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
The phase out is part of the current administration’s plan to address the climate. The goal is to avoid up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by 2100.
Jamie Terstegge, a consultant with Air Specialists Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. says the main impact will be long term.
Essentially, once the phase out is implemented in the next couple of years, air conditioners will become too expensive to repair when they break down after years of service.”

HFC’s as they are called account for less than 2% of greenhouse-gas emissions. However, they are one of the more potent greenhouse gases and can stay in the atmosphere for thousands of years. Of course, this isn’t the first phase-out of a particular coolant. The thing to watch will be how this affects consumer pricing in the short term as older units will be incompatible with this new refrigerant.
