You are currently viewing Did your water heater break? Follow these steps

“First and foremost, turn the gas or the electricity off. Typically, your circuit breaker will have a switch that can turn the electricity off to the unit. For gas, there’s usually a dial you can twist just above the thermostat.

Next, you’re going to want to turn off the water supply to the unit. Turn your water valve clockwise until the water stops. If that doesn’t work, then you should locate your water main valve and shut the water off to the house. This step is especially critical if you spot a leak and should not be skipped, even if you have professional help on the way.

At this point, we recommend waiting for a professional to open the relief valve or drain the system. It can be done by the homeowner, however, if something isn’t done correctly this can be very dangerous and you can be seriously injured. If you do happen to have a large leak, keep an eye on it and, if necessary, use a wet/dry vac to control the water.”

We highly suggest that you do not attempt to open the relief valve yourself. We know how frustrating it is to suddenly realize that your water heater is broken. However, things could get much worse if the proper precautionary steps aren’t taken.
